The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) in statement yesterday said that it will not go back to Parliament, “pursuant to Article 106(7) of the Constitution, to support any extension of the time for the holding of General and Regional Elections.”
The party’s statement comes on the heels of a statement by Minister of Social Cohesion, George Norton, that Government is considering going back to Parliament.
Attorney General, Basil Williams, also recently stated that he hopes the Opposition would have a change of heart, as an extension to the deadline would be the only opportunity to ensure Guyana is not left in a Constitutional crisis.
The Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo, has said time and time again that no extension would be granted.
Based on her understanding of the judgment and consequential orders by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), Chief Justice Roxane George yesterday said that the date for general and regional elections, March 21, has long gone.
During a hearing of arguments on Friday last, in an application for a Conservatory Order against House-to-House registration by Attorney-at-law Christopher Ram, George noted that “we” are supposedly in a period of an extension for the timeframe for holding elections, but that extension has not been agreed on.
“We are still waiting on the National Assembly to meet,” she stated.
