Two repeat offenders were yesterday hauled before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where they were charged for attempting to break into a store.
Marvin Blackman, 28, a fish cleaner of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara; and Steve Singh, 27, a fisherman of Lot 9 Riverview, Ruimveldt, both pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them.
It was alleged that between July 29 and July 30, last, at Regent Road, Bourda, Georgetown, they attempted to break into the business place of Harrilall Narine.
The number one defendant, Blackman, was represented by attorney-at-law George Thomas, while his co-accused was not represented.
No objections were made for bail to be granted to the men; however, a request was made by police prosecutor Richard Harris to have conditions to be attached to the bail based on the fact that the men are known to the court having been charge with similar matters before.
Magistrate Daly then upheld the submission made by the prosecutor and granted bail to the men to the tune of $10,000 each under the condition that they report to the police station nearest to their place of abode until the completion of the present matter before the court.
Blackman, who is a court regular, was remanded in August 2017 on charges of illegal possession of a Glock semi automatic pistol and eight live rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The then 25-year-old was at the time out on bail in connection with a spate of robberies.
In 2016, Blackman was charged along with two others, for allegedly robbing Shane Robin, Supervisor at Wild Caught Fresh Fish Depot, at gunpoint.
They are accused of robbing Robin of $60,000, and stealing a quantity of fish valued $1.5 million, from Leonard Jettoo at Meadow Bank.
It was also alleged that on August 15, 2017, with intent to commit murder or cause grievous bodily harm, Blackman discharged a loaded firearm at Carl Welshman. It was further alleged that on that same day whilst in the company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed Welshman of a cell phone valued $50,000 and other items worth $175,000.
Further, it is alleged that in November of that same year, while in the company of others and armed with a gun, he robbed Danny Singh of $45,000 and other items all worth $50,000.
Additionally, Blackman was charged with robbing Bramanand Chetram of $500,000 among other items all worth $3,019,000 – property of Bibi Shaffaur.
It is also alleged that on the same day, he robbed Parmanand Chetram of a cellular phone and other items – all totalling $14,000 – while in the company of others and armed with a gun. He was remanded on the charges, but was again granted bail.
In 2018, while on bail, Blackman was again before the court. This time, he was accused of robbing a woman who was held up with a toy gun. The victim was allegedly trailed from a commercial bank at Diamond Housing Scheme, to a shop in the same community. She was relieved of $50,000.
Singh was sentenced in 2017 for robbing an East Bank Demerara business of just over $20M in cash and articles.
