Cummings Lodge Secondary and East Ruimveldt Secondary were crowned male and female champions respectively of the ExxonMobil/ Petra Organisation schools’ U14 football tournament which concluded yesterday at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.
In an exciting male final, Cummings Lodge edged Carmel Secondary 5-4 on penalties after the teams were locked at 2-2 following 50 minutes of regulation time and 12 minutes of extra time.
Both teams failed to find the back of the net in the first half with shots going wide of goal. Cummings Lodge went ahead in the 30th minute when Carmel defender Nephi Allicock handled the ball inside the area and Captain Jitzah Martinez made no mistake from the spot. Ian Daniels drew Carmel Secondary level in the 43rd minute as he fired his shot home after winning the ball from outside the area. The remaining regulation time couldn’t separate the teams and the match went into extra time.
Martinez was again on target eight minutes into extra time when he worked his way inside the area and sent his powerful shot into the roof of the net. Daniels found the equaliser two minutes later from inside the box and the outcome had to be decided by spot kicks.
Martinez, goal-keeper Mark Conyers, Raovin Henry, Elijah Mendonca and Daniel Murray converted, while Lewis Larson and Shiloh Adams were denied for Cummings Lodge.
Ian Daniels, goal-keeper Simon Allicock, Shem James and Nephi Allicock found the back of the net, while Matthew Layne, Joshua Cozier and Alwin Dawson shots were kept out for Carmel.
Martinez was named the MVP and also collected the award for scoring the most goals (12), while Simeon Allicock was named the best goal-keeper.
East Ruimveldt Secondary won the female final against New Campbellville Secondary 1-0 courtesy of an own goal by Imani Maxwell in the 41st minute. Carlita Ross of Charlestown Secondary with six goals took the award for the highest goal scorer with, while the most valuable player accolade went to Sherry Rodrigues of East Ruimveldt.
Dolphin Secondary beat Queenstown Secondary 1-0 to win the third place game in the male division. Nicholas Tappin netted in the first minute of added time.
