Burnhamism taken to greater heights
DEAR EDITOR,
When the leader of the Opposition brought to fore the fact that the Coalition has been trying to get Haitians and other foreign nationals fraudulently registered to pad the voters list, some thought that he was just politicizing the issue and casting aspersions just for political mileage. However, he was right on target which has now become his trademark style in exposing the corrupt practices of this Government of which this ‘people smuggling’ racket is the latest one.
He rightly concluded that these foreign nationals will form part of the new voters’ list if the house to house registration succeeds. It must be noted that the Leader of the Opposition made this claim of smuggling Haitians some 2 years ago in the National Assembly. He knew the intention of the Coalition since then!
It is quite revealing when a media house exposed the fact that during the last seven months 8,600 Haitians arrived in this country while only 13 departed back to their home country. It also unearthed a well-coordinated scheme to facilitate entry of Haitians which involves key stakeholders at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
This case of the vanishing Haitians was solved when it was discovered that they have been issued with fake documentation and are working and living right in the City. It was reported on social media that these foreign nationals are given monetary and other incentives to become registered in order to vote for the Coalition.
Thus far, statistics have shown that more than 16,000 Cubans and 8,000 Haitians are still in this country. And this is only 2 groups!
Burnhamism is being taken to a higher level! In Burnham days it was fraudulent overseas voting, now it is foreigners becoming Guyanese illegally and being allowed to vote! The overseas rigging is now brought home by the APNU/AFC.
It must also be noted that according to Article 159 of our Constitution, only Commonwealth Citizens domiciled in Guyana and above the age of 18 may be registered and vote.
Haiti, Cuba and Venezuela are not part of the Commonwealth, so once again the Coalition is violating our Constitution. Therefore the registration of these nationals is fraudulent and criminal. It shows the depth to which this Government has descended in order to remain in power. The seemingly gratuitous offer to grant 6 months stay to Haitians was simply to legitimize the entry to facilitate the electoral fraud. Burnham must be so proud of his disciples.
In conclusion, Guyana is being illegally ‘recolonized’ not only to kill democracy, but to herald the advent of the worse dictatorship in the Western hemisphere, unless Guyanese now stand up and say in one voice that General Elections must be held by September 18th. The house to house registration scam must be aborted NOW!
