There are press reports circulating that Guyana has attracted record number of visitors, which I am not sure what it really means. Is it Guyanese returning home for family visits, is it actually tourists from around the world or is it foreigners who venture off to the interior locations to do videoing or research?
I do frequent the capital city on a regular basis and I am always looking around with the hope of witnessing this record number of visitors and to be more clear, ‘tourists’ which I can’t seem to ever cross path with. Sometimes, I see a few persons with their cameras and that’s basically it.
Perhaps, I always miss these large groups of tourists.
Nevertheless, to my mind, a great lot has to be put in place for Guyana’s tourism growth, but I am not certain if Guyana is really serious and have the resources available.
Matters not who were Governor General or President at whatever period, if you don’t understand the importance of your history and its preservation, what exactly are you promoting and educating to tourists?
I do possess a small collection of photos from the 1981 Inaugural Mass Games at the National Park and I have knocked on many doors to see if they have an interest, but it appears that they don’t understand the importance of such a cultural historic event. I have always thought that the Emancipation Event, which is annually at the National Park on August 1 over the years would be the ideal forum for these photo images to be cleaned up by a graphic artist, mounted on a special cardboard and perhaps framed for display, but then again, resources are never available.
It is difficult to comprehend some Guyanese when they say that they have to preserve their ancestry from Africa, attired with African Prints and have no interest with a historic event and in this case, the Mass Games which happened here for a number of years.
There is only so much I am capable of doing, having made a great effort over the years and unfortunately, due to a very tight budget, I can’t take on any additional expenses. The least I can share with the general public is a few photo images for viewing via the ‘Press’ of The Inaugural Mass Games in 1981 as my donation towards Guyana’s 2019 Emancipation Celebrations.
Yours faithfully
T. Pemberton
