Everyone expects churches and human rights bodies to do their duty
DEAR EDITOR,
The churches and human rights bodies, over the years, had taken up historically correct positions in supporting the Rule of Law, the upholding of the Guyana Constitution and maintaining Democracy. They did this fearlessly irrespective of the political party in Government.
For example, the Catholic Church has won for itself an important place in Guyanese Constitutional History with the struggles for Democracy by priests such as Father Morrison, Father Malcolm Rodrigues and Father Dark who was martyred. Owing to this strong identification of the church with morality and Democracy, its membership became more deeply affiliated and non-Catholics supported the church.
Now at this time of great travail of the Guyanese people, the churches and human rights bodies must support the Rule of Law by supporting the CCJ’s rulings, call for the upholding of the Guyana Constitution and insist Democracy must be protected and any creeping Dictatorship must be stamped out.
So far, the churches and human rights bodies have been silent and many feel that they are betraying the Christian obligation and the Christian message and ultimately weakening religion.
Would the churches come out and act! The public expects them to do their duty.
