After flexing his way to a Pro Card at the 45th edition of the CAC Body Building & Fitness Championships last year in Mexico, USA based Guyanese Bruce Sevlon Whatley competing for the first time at this level was able to snare the bronze medal at the inaugural IFBB Diamond Cup, Saint Martin/St. Maarten Championships Sonesta Maho Beach Resort and Casino on Sunday last.
The championship which was managed by the IFBB of Spain consisted of six categories: Bodybuilding, Men’s Physique, Women’s Physique, Women’s Fitness, Bikini, and Wellness.
Whatley, who did not have the usual time to prepare (14 to 17 weeks) for this show (5 weeks) owing to his father falling ill in Guyana last month and having to be here, still managed to finish in the top three behind gold medalist Daniel Gorvey of Grenada and Omar Pellejero of Spain.
His normal weight class would have been 90kg (198lbs & under) and not being able to keep that weight, the Guyanese gladiator had to compete in the big league.
Whatley commented on his performance: “I am very, very happy with my performance, to compete at the professional level at the biggest bodybuilding organisation and to be in the top three is remarkable. So I am extremely proud of my performance, especially since I prepared in just 5 weeks.”
