President and executives of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) have gathered resources to assist their club members who have been selected on the national Under-19 side for the upcoming Cricket West Indies Regional U-19 tournament which is set to bowl off in St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Sunday.
Club Captain, Dennis Squires told members of the media that as a club, DCC is very proud of having five members selected to represent Guyana at the championships and they have collectively pooled resources to add to the players’ comfort while away on national duties.
Together the club members and friends have organised donations of cricket gear and money that will be distributed to the five players. Among the corporate companies making contributions are Royal Real Estate and Construction Firm, Regal Stationery and Computer Centre and Roger Harper Sports while Vice Presidents Patrick Harding and Lawrence Smith and member Carol Lonke have also chipped in.
The players selected are left-arm spinners Daniel Mootoo and Ashmead Nedd, top order batsmen Sachin Singh and Alphius Bookie and impressive fast medium bowler, Qumar Torrington. Squires thanked the donors for once again assisting the club’s initiative and used the opportunity to wish the players well.
Guyana will begin their quest for a sixth consecutive 50-over U19 title on Sunday when they take on hosts Windward Islands at Arnos Vale Sporting Complex. This year, only 50 overs matches will be contested among the six CWI territorial teams in a round-robin format where each team will play each other once. The final round is on August 6.
