The Berbice Cricket Board on Wednesday 10th July, launched a countywide programme to visit all thirteen clubs and three Sub-Associations who are members of the Board. President Hilbert Foster, Vice President Albert Smith, Asst Secretary Ameer Rahaman and Administrator Angela Haniff launched the project by visiting the Rose Hall Canje Cricket Club and Port Mourant Cricket Club on Wednesday 10th July, and Thursday 11th July, while the President visited the Chesney Cricket Club and Whim National Cricket Club on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th July. The President is expected to visit three other Clubs – Guymine, Mt. Sinai and Mental Hospital before the end of July.
At the clubs visited, Foster stated that the objectives of the visits are to inform Club Members of the county of Berbice, achievements made over the last eighteen months, unveil plans for the future, discuss areas of cooperation, and to listen to suggestions from the Clubs on the development of the game. Foster encouraged the Members of the Clubs to offer constructive criticism and to be frank with their assessment of Berbice Cricket.
The Foster led Berbice Cricket Board has raised over $18M in cash and kind after taking over a Bank Account of less than $50,000, hosted numerous developmental programmes and assisted Clubs with millions of dollars worth of items. Foster urged all the Clubs to invest heavily in the development of new cricketing talents and pledge the Berbice Cricket Board’s assistance by providing coaches. He also urged the Clubs to make sure that they increase their membership, promote the importance of Education, Discipline and to get involved in social work to make a positive difference in the lives of Youths. The Clubs were informed that the Berbice Cricket Board would assist them with balls, water pitchers, scorebooks, Cricket T/Shirts and Youth Information Booklets. Some Clubs would also benefit from donation of bicycles, batting gloves, educational materials, school bags, trophies and medals as the Board strives to assist its members to fulfill their mandates.
At the Whim National Club, the President was able to solve an internal problem by getting Club members to host an Annual General Meeting on Saturday 27th July, 2019. The Whim National Cricket Club would also be hosting a four team cricket tournament co-sponsored by the Berbice Cricket Board and the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS. The four teams would be Whim, Tain Block Four, Tamarind Root and Belvedere United. The Chesney Cricket Club would also host a special four team tournament as a tribute to Chesney resident Mr. D. Somwaru, a former Berbice Cricket Board President and Umpire. The teams would be Chesney, Toopoo, Jai Hind and Albion Open. The President also committed to assisting the Chesney Club with three rolls of mesh to undertake repairs to their ground.
The President’s commitment of a bicycle, school bags, educational materials and batting gloves have already been fulfilled to Rose Hall Canje, Whim and Port Mourant. Members of all of the Clubs visited to date, expressed gratitude to the Berbice Cricket Board President for his visit and praised the outstanding work of the Board. The Clubs were delighted that the Berbice Cricket Board is willing to listen to their views and most importantly to offer areas of cooperation. Foster committed to visiting the Clubs on a regular basis and to upholding the high standard the Berbice Cricket Board has set itself.
