DEAR EDITOR,
I am disturbed about the political atmosphere in Guyana at this time. I have been observing politics in Guyana for over 60 years and from that experience I am convinced that the level of trust between the Government and Opposition has never been lower and yet most of the comments I read in the media call on the President to select a GECOM Chairman from the list presented to him by the Leader of the Opposition.
The level of trust is too low particularly after the Dec 2018 successful no – confidence Motion for President Granger to accept a name from the list provided by the Opposition leader. There is need for a new formula and I am proposing the Following as a starter.
1. President Granger as I understand it has cleared a number of names for consideration
2. The opposition Leader should also clear between 3 to 6 names for consideration
3. 6 or 12 names should be sealed and placed in an appropriate container.
4. The opposition leader will draw two names from the container present these to the President for him to select one.
I believe that a process of this type will impose upon both leaders the need to propose the persons they judge to be best qualified to perform their duties in an impartial manner
Regards,
A Concerned Observer
