Head of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA); K.A. Juman Yassin, confirmed the 40-member contingent that will represent the Golden Arrowhead at the 18th Pan American Games which will be held in Lima, Peru from the 22nd of this month to August 12th., during a press conference yesterday morning at the GOA’s Secretariat at Lilliendaal.
The Chef-de-Mission will be Nalini McKoy and Guyana will be represented in eight disciplines, namely Badminton, Rugby Sevens, Swimming, Taekwando, Table Tennis, Squash, Boxing and Athletics.
Boxing coach, Terrence Poole, is positive that prodigy Keevin Allicock will do well at the games and he shared during the brief that, “We are getting a steady and positive report out of Cuba so we know he is doing full time preparation. Keevin is one of the brightest spots that we have. I expect him to be on the podium because he would’ve seen many of the boxers that qualified for Pan Am games fight before.”
Currently, the athletics contingent consists of Winston George (200m), Aliyah Abrams (400m), Emanuel Archibald (Long Jump), Brenessa Thompson (100m) and the coach/manager is Julian Edmonds. However, during the press conference, Edmonds noted that Jenea McCammon; Guyana’s 110m women’s hurdles record holder, has been cleared in the technical delegate of the Pan Am games to compete.
Edmonds noted that the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will immediately make contact with McCammon to ascertain her availability and level of fitness to compete at the games.
The last time Guyana won a medal at the Pan Am games was in 2011, Mexico, when Nicolette Fernandes finished with the Bronze medal. This year, the squash team won’t have any male representatives but it is the first time that they will be competing in the ladies doubles. The team consists of Taylor Fernandes (cousin of Nicolette), Mary Fung-A-Fat and national champion Ashley Khalil.
Fernandes is very upbeat about their potential performances in the ladies doubles and team events but the team competition will be a bit stiffer with the likes of world top 50 players from the U.S. and Canada set to participate. The ladies noted that it is a great honour to finally participate in the Pan Am games and they will give it their best.
The GOA boss would be happy to hear the positive intent of the athletes after he noted during the media brief yesterday that, “I am hoping that our players will compete well. I am hoping for medals, but the important thing is for each athlete to do their best. It is for each athlete to be able to see in their mind that they could win, for each of them to picture themselves on the podium, unless they do, that it is not going to happen.”
