Jamaica defeated Guyana by six runs when the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional U17 50-over tournament continued yesterday. Skipper Sheldon Charles and Sarwan Chaitnarine shared seven wickets between them as Jamaica were bowled out for 104, batting first at Gilbert Park. Charles made early inroads, removing the top three batsmen to reduce the Jamaicans to 32-3.
They never recovered from this position as Charles finished with 4-26 from nine overs while Chaitnarine claimed 3-11 from 4.4 overs. S. Walker top scored with 16 while B. English made 14 and S. Thompson 12.
Guyana’s inept batting in the tournament continued as they were bowled out for 99 in 46 overs, in response. Zynul Ramsammy made 23 not out with two fours while Matthew Nandu and Niran Bissu made 13 each.
O. Ennis took three wickets while S. Thompson had two for Jamaica who beat Guyana for the first time at this level since 2014. No Guyana side has ever loss four straight games at this level and this is easily their worst performance in this tournament to date.
However, most of blame should be laid on the selectors for their omission of a number of players who would have done well at the inter-county level to earn their spots on the team. Those include fast bowler Isai Thorne who has been selected to tour England with the West Indies U16 team next month, Jonathan Rampersaud, Daniel Mootoo who was outstanding in the U19 inter county competition with a man-of-the-match performance in the final, Shamar Yearwood, Abdul Ramsammy, Ricardo Ramdial and Trevon Charles.
Defending champions Barbados moved one step closer to retaining their title by defeating Trinidad and Tobago at Couva. Guyana will now take on Leeward Islands in their final round game at Couva tomorrow.
