Marine transportation services corporation, Harvey Gulf International Marine Inc. officially launched its country office — Guyana Offshore Vessel Services Inc. —on Wednesday in Barrack and Fort Streets, Kingston.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, President of the American Chamber of Commerce of Guyana, Zulfikar Ally, welcomed the company to Guyana. Its presence will greatly contribute to the development of the nation’s energy sector, he said.
“Your presence in Guyana will do more than just create jobs; it will lift industry standards in the oil and marine sectors, improve safety standards and safety culture, and can serve to streamline important aspects of health and safety at the national policy level through collaboration with the private sector and national authorities,” Mr. Ally told the gathering.
Chief Executive Officer of Harvey Gulf International Marine Inc., Mr. Shane Guidry said that his company has found a permanent place in Guyana and he was proud to emphasise his company’s commitment to local content.
“We are going to continue to grow in this region… We’d love to see the day when it’s 100% Guyanese, where we could possible reflag boats [with] a Guyanese flag, as long as, that makes sense and the government supports that and has a support system for it. But we’re here to stay. We’re here to stay,” Mr. Guidry stated.
“The people were so energetic, so vibrant, so thirsty to learn and thirsty to want to be part of something new, something that’s going to be big for Guyana. It really hit home to me because people are what made Harvey Gulf for the past 65 years and I couldn’t be prouder to be able to work with the people of Guyana,” Mr. Guidry said.
“We came down here with the thought process of opening our office, which we did. We hired employees without knowing if or when we would ever get work. Because of the wonderful reporting of your news media, which I have to thank, after I left Guyana within about a week my phone started ringing.”
Petroleum Geologist at the Department of Energy, Marissa Foster, pointed out that the establishment of offices in Guyana by international companies demonstrates confidence in Guyana and in the growth of the energy sector.
Foster added that the Department of Energy looks forward to collaboration between foreign and local companies, especially those that involve capacity building through the transfer of knowledge and skills sharing.
Established in 1955, Harvey Gulf International Marine Inc. owns and operates a fleet of Fast Supply and Utility Vessels, Offshore Supply Vessels and Multi-purpose Vessels that specialize in deepwater and ultra-deepwater operations.
