In his latest update on the progress of 19-year-old Bantamweight Pan American Games medal hopeful Keevin Allicock’s training stint in the Spanish speaking Caribbean Island of Cuba, National Boxing Coach, Cuban Francisco Roldan, indicated that Allicock’s stint was going very well.
“He is doing six rounds sparring sessions and at this moment he is doing well. We are training in the High performance Boxing academy which is a Senior Boxing High level Centre, in my province, Villa Clara, where the Boxers are in camp full time,” said Coach Roldan.
From next week, Allicock will continue his training focusing on tactical work.
According to Coach Roldan, Allicock will continue with sparring sessions to different Styles and a programme has been implemented to do two training sessions in the sand at the beach of largest Island in the Caribbean.
“This Saturday he did, sparring…. four rounds…and he was very Nice. He is doing joint training with a total of six free rounds with different directed tasks. This work is very hard and very similar to the sparring. He will do very Nice in Pan-American games,” continued Roldan who was brought back Guyana by the GOA who is funding his work with the Albouystown resident. Roldan assured that Allicock was working hard as he never did before.
Allicock’s Road to Peru where this year’s Pan American Games will be held, has not been all smooth driving but so far the few obstacles has not stopped him from moving forward with what promises to be an illustrious career in the fistic Sport.
In the Pam Am Games Qualifiers in Nicaragua, the skilful Allicock was set to fight Alexy De Cruz of Dominican Republic but was prevented from doing so by Technical Delegate (Fight Supervisor) Rapheal Vega who claimed that the Guyanese was wearing an inappropriate coloured vest.Through intervention by the GBA, Allicock has now qualified for the Games despite his controversial walkover loss in Nicaragua.
GBA’s President Steve Ninvalle had sent a letter to the GOA President recommending that this trip Cuba be put on hold and Allicock’s monthly stipend be stopped due to the Boxer’s negligence with regards to his training programme.
But as they say all is well that ends well and so is the case of Allicock. The best ending would be Allicock bringing home a Gold Medal.
Ninvalle, in reacting to Coach Roldan’s report said the GBA is heartened by the commitment young Allicock is showing.
“He is looking forward and not backward. Having him move up to a higher level of training is most important if he is to medal at the Pan Am Games.
I am confident that Mr. Allicock will return to Guyana adequately prepared to face any opposition in Peru,” Ninvalle concluded.
