The 2019 Cricket Academy of the Albion Community Centre Cricket Club began on Monday with an opening ceremony at the Albion Community Development Center. The activity is scheduled to end on Saturday 13th with a closing ceremony with daily session from 08:00 hrs to 16:15 hrs.
The activity, which began at 08:00 hours, saw those in attendance being involved in a getting to know you session. A number of officials were in attendance including Hilbert Foster, President of the Berbice Cricket Board, West Indies Test Cricketer Devendra Bishoo, the Human Resources Manager (HRM) acting and the Community Development Officer (CDO) of Albion Estate and the Vice President of the Albion Cricket Club among others.The camp which is being held under the theme, “To expose young cricketers to the basic fundamental of the game” is being sponsored by Bishoo among others with the BCB also making a significant contribution.
The opening ceremony was address by Foster, Bishoo the HRM, the CDO and the VP of the club. Over the period the teens are expected to be taught a number of topics, including the importance of education, basic Mathematics and English, the importance of Physical fitness, a cricketer as an ambassador, discipline, motivation, etiquette and social grace, safety tips, first aid, substance abuse, public speaking and communication, the laws of cricket, leadership and captaincy, among others.
There will be daily cricket and evaluation sessions in the afternoons. Bishoo and fellow test player Veerasammy Permaul and BCB secretary Angela Haniff are slated to be some of the tutors.
Apart from Bishoo and Permaul, Albion has produced test players, Sew Shivnarine, Sewnarine Chattergoon and Narsingh Deonarine and a number of outstanding national Players including Sudesh Dhaniram and Leslaine Lambert.
Some 40 persons ranging from ages 18-8 attended the first day. Former nation U19 player Orvin Mangru, the current CDO, is one of the coordinators. (Samuel Whyte)
