Who has failed these departed souls?
DEAR EDITOR,
While the adulations continue to pour in for the Police Force for the elimination of two criminal gangs that inflicted fear, death and robbery to households in Regions Four and Six, we must not gloat over their deaths.
Guyana can ill afford to lose our males to crime by the threes at a time when we lament the acute shortage of our citizens with the requisite skills to take up jobs in the emerging oil and gas industry.
At times like these, the question on the lips of many is, “Who has failed these departed souls?” Is it their parents, their teachers, their religious leaders, the community, the government, the movies or is it their own warped minds? Who can tell? Maybe the sociologists could help us navigate these choppy waters.
In closing, I humbly suggest that the Guyana Police Force provide, as a matter of Standard Operational Procedure (SOP), counselling for all the Police ranks who were engaged in the exchange of gunfire with the dead men, in order to mitigate post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). If this is not addressed in a deliberate manner, it can lead to long term adverse effects.
