A number of farmers on the Essequibo Coast will now be cultivating rice for the purpose of producing seed paddy, in a number of varieties.
This publication understands that intuitive is now being reintroduced by the Guyana Rice Development Board, after some 30 years.
According to the president of the Essequibo Paddy Farmers association, Naith Ram, 32 acres of rice land will be cultivated for seed paddy. Commenting on the varieties’ being produced, Naith Ram added, “GRDB has contracted farmers to grow and produce seed paddy varieties such as the Rustic, 135, 22-4, 196 and GRDB 14 a total of 32 acres.”
Naith Ram, being a board member on the GRDB board, explained that the recommendations to have the seed paddy produced locally, were made on the basis of their being a shortage in the seed paddy. This publication understands the seed paddy varieties, are usually transported from Region Six, at a cost that is relatively higher than paddy produced locally.
Commenting on the quality of the paddies being produced, Naith Ram pointed out that the 135, GRDB 14, 196 AND 22-4 are all varieties that are blast resistant.
