The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) KFC National U20 Independence Cup is set for an exciting climax tomorrow at the GFF National Training Centre, Providence, East Bank Demerara. Santos of Georgetown and Dynamic of Linden will battle in the grand finale from 15:30hrs as both teams earned that right with semi final victories over Fruta Conquerors of Georgetown and Botofago of Linden respectively.
Following a scrappy first half in which neither Santos nor Fruta Conquerors looked threatening, with their few shots going wide of goal, both teams came closer to finding the back of the net in the second half which also failed to create much excitement. Stephen Reynolds wasted a decent opportunity to put his team ahead, minutes into the second stanza, but he sent his shot over the cross bar following a pass from Ronaldo Rodrigues at mid field. Ronaldo’s weak shot, shortly after, from the edge of the area, was calmly kept out by goal-keeper Simeon Hackett, but Santos deservedly went ahead moments later.
A throw in from the right side of the area, was played into the box and an unmarked Reynolds made no mistake as he headed home in the 80th minute.
Fruta Conquerors pressed forward in search of an equaliser and a shot from Nehemiah Gomes inside the area hit the upright, before Reynolds made it 2-0 in the 80th minute. The forward received a pass from midfield and made his way into the area before beating the
advancing goal-keeper Hackett from the right side of the box. Fruta Conquerors clearly missed the creativity of Nicholas McArthur who was red-carded in their previous fixture against Buxton United FC in which he scored a double to help his team secure their place in the final four.
Earlier, Maurice Adams netted twice to help Dynamic FC secure a 4-2 victory over Botofago FC. Shane Haynes put Botofago ahead in the 24th minute before Adams found the equaliser in the 33rd. Julius Hamilton slotted home in the 43rd minute to hand Dynamic FC a 2-1 lead at the break.
Adams stretched his team’s lead when he found the back of the net in the 60th before Andre Mayers scored Botofago FC second in the 71st. John Gonsalves sealed his team’s final spot when he slotted home in the first minute of added time.
Fruta Conquerors and Botofago will contest the third place game from 13:00hrs tomorrow.
