After the report on claims Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo made about a massive land grab by the current government, and the consequent responses, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has come out in criticism of Kaieteur News.
The party is accusing the newspaper of having an agenda.
In a lengthy statement, the PPP maintained its land grabbing claims are true and called out Kaieteur News over its “bias against the party.”
In the release, the PPP said that Kaieteur News’s publication of June 29, 2019, headlined ‘Jagdeo in possession of stolen Land and Surveys documents…Police called in’ – clearly demonstrates the agenda of this newspaper.
Kaieteur News wishes to correct the PPP, in that its statement neglected to include a vital part of that article’s headline. The full headline reads: ‘GLSC Head Trevor Benn says…Jagdeo in possession of stolen Lands and Surveys documents…Police called in’.
This indicates that Kaieteur News did not make these claims; it reported on a statement made by Commissioner of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC), Trevor Benn.
Further, according to the PPP during the years that the PPP/C held office, the government was demonised by the Kaieteur News without documentary evidence.
The statement added, “Yet, when evidence is provided to expose the current APNU+AFC Coalition Government, the Kaieteur News is more concerned about how the documents were accessed and not the fact that the documents expose a mad rush by a select few linked to the APNU+AFC cabal to grab land in strategic locations.”
“Even the first article published by the Kaieteur News, on June 28, 2019, following the release of the documents by the PPP General Secretary referred to the disclosures as “fabrications” despite the fact that the entire media corps was presented with real, documentary, evidence.”
Further the release outlined that the Kaieteur News’s continued attempts to excuse the corruption and incompetence of the APNU+AFC Coalition Government has been demonstrated.
“No attempt at a cover-up will undermine the facts, which are clear in the minds of our Guyanese people.”
In the meantime, the PPP noted it has now been over 53 hours [at the time the release was sent out] since details about the massive land grab have been disclosed.
The truth be told, there was no land grab as explained by head of the Guyana Land and Surveys Commission, Trevor Benn.
When Kaieteur News contacted Jagdeo via phone yesterday to enquire about several statements he made, the Opposition Leader refused to answer, claiming that this publication has misrepresented the facts. As Kaieteur News attempted to gather further clarity on his accusations, the Opposition Leader abruptly ended the call.
“The attempts to obfuscate the issue at hand have failed to undermine the facts of this matter. The clear linkages between the land grabbing, particularly after the passage of the no-confidence motion on December 21, 2018, and the Ministry of the Presidency must be addressed by President Granger, who cannot continue to feign ignorance about what is occurring under his watch,” the statement added.
