The Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) yesterday received a two-ton roller, worth over six-million Guyana dollars and donated by joint venture company, Shore Base Inc.
The donation was made at the DCC’s Pavilion during a simple handing over ceremony, attended by club members and representatives of Shore Base.
DCC’s President Roger Harper said the donation will contribute to raising the standard of the club’s match and practice pitches which augers well for the Queenstown facility.
“This roller will automatically mean that our match pitches will be better prepared. It will mean that our practice pitches will also be better prepared,” said Harper, who along with fellow DCC club mate Clive Lloyd are the only Guyana Captains to win both the First-Class and 50-over titles in the same season.
“I would like to thank Guyana Shore Base Inc. for choosing to make such an important and significant donation to our club; for a club like ours to continue the path to success and continuing to producing legends,” said Harper, a former Guyana Skipper and West Indies Vice-Captain.
Among the Greats produced by DCC are the first ever winning West Indies Captain Maurice Fernandes who achieved the feat in 1930 at Bourda, Lloyd, who won the first two World Cup in 1975 & ’79, Roy Fredericks, who once held the record for the fastest Test Century and Lance Gibbs, who was first to 300 Test wickets.
“However, significantly it also means that we can now have two pitches on afternoons for practice and will allow more players the opportunity in the afternoons to bat and bowl and this will have a direct impact on the hundreds of players who use our pitches and facilities,” added Harper.
Harper, President of the GCA, promised that the Roller will be well used and maintained so as to ensure longevity in use.
Meanwhile, General Manager of Shore Base Inc, Mark Edwards, said the company is pleased to be partnering with a club whose sterling history prompted the company to make the donation.
He explained that Shore Base is equally excited about Guyana’s future, the future of the club and is hopeful that the contribution of the roller will now have an impact in moulding the next generation of DCC legends. (Sean Devers)
