All eyes are now focused on who will be the picked for the new Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission.
The choice of a Candidate could be elusive if ‘perfection’ is what is being sought after. The eighteen names proposed earlier by the Opposition Leader contained names of individuals who may not have been ‘perfect’ but who in my respectful view are not without honour and integrity.
All of that is now water under the bridge. The imperative is to move on and come up with a new list of names not unacceptable to the President.
This is why the recommendation by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) for a ‘consensual’ approach involving the Leader of the Opposition and President Granger in the search of a suitable Candidate has considerable merit.
This methodology will address the criterion of someone acceptable to the President while at the same time dispensing with the need to go beyond a first submission as was previously the case.
The constitutional clock is ticking and time is of the essence. Any further delay in the appointment of a Chair, apart from impeding the work of GECOM, will result in further harm to the body politic and to our image as a law governed and rules-based society.
