Over the past two weeks, the ferry Mv. Sabanto, which plies the Parika/Supenaam route, has been reportedly docked for repairs and maintenance.Like the Demerara or Berbice Bridge, the ferries Sabanto and Kanawan operate with a traffic schedule between the Parika/Supenaam route.
Kaieteur News understands that with just one ferry now plying the route, there have been some major changes to the schedule. While passengers may have quickly adapted to this schedule, truckers find it quite challenging, especially since one ferry can only accommodate a few trucks.
One driver told this publication that since the Mv Kanawan cannot transport all the Heavy Duty Vehicles at once, there is major parking congestion at the Parika ferry terminal.
“At the Parika end here it ain’t really got no parking near the Stelling. The closest parking is about half a mile from the Stelling and the area is not a safe area to park all over the place,” said one driver.
One driver said that some two weeks ago his truck was broken into and a quantity of cash of stolen.
Based on reports, the older ferry, Mv Malali, also plies the Parika to Wakenaam route, which is in close proximity to the Supenaam Stelling. A number of truck drivers believe that the Malali can, and should be used as a substitute for the Sabanto ferry.
“The ferry does come till up to Wakenaam. All Transport and Harbour got to do is let the ferry cross over to Supenaam with the smaller vehicles and they can use the Sabanto, which is a bigger ferry to move the heavy trucks.”
