Captain of Regal Masters’ Mahendra Hardyal is confident that his team can successfully defend their title in the upcoming New York Softball Cricket League Independence Cup and Legends Cup.
Regal Masters will contest the Over-45 category in the tournament which is set to commence on June 28 and conclude two days later. Regal Masters of Georgetown and Fisherman Masters, which is based on the East Coast of Demerara, are the two Guyanese teams that will be taking part in this year’s edition of the tournament, which also includes teams from New York, Florida and Canada. Matches will be played at Canarsie in Brooklyn and Roy Wilkins Park in Queen’s, New York.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Hardyal expressed confidence that his team can retain their title, adding that they will not take any team for granted. All-rounder Hardyal, added that their preparation was somewhat affected by the rain; however they managed to get in a few games prior to their departure. He stated that the team is well balanced and comprises of a number of experienced players who have played in numerous tournaments overseas and stressed on the importance of team work.
Regal Masters are widely tipped as the favourites, but Hardyal said that they will take each game step by step, stating that it is important for all the players to contribute positively. The team’s media liaison officer, John Ramsingh said the players are all ready and eager to go. The team includes the likes of Eon Abel, Eric Thomas, Ramesh Deonarine, Lloyd Ruplall and Mahendranauth Parsnauth.
Apart from 2018, Regal Masters have also won the title in 2016 and took the runner up spot in 2015 and 2017. The team is set to depart today.
Among the sponsors on board are ISG, Star Party Rentals, Ink Plus, The Computer Store, Elegant Jewellery and Pawn Shop, Regal Stationery and Computer Centre, Regal Sport and Crown Mining.
