The Government Analyst Food and Drug Department (GA-FDD) is advising the general public, wholesalers, Importers and retailers of an exercise that was conducted to take action against the practice of repackaging flour from 45 Kg bags of flour at the point of sale.
In a release the entity stated that on June 19 and June 20, last, inspectors of the Department visited several retail outlets, markets and supermarkets in Georgetown and on the lower East Coast where the practice of repackaging flour under unsanitary conditions and placing it in unlabelled plastic bags is prevalent.
Officers seized and removed from premises, 89 bags of wheat flour that was being repackaged under insanitary conditions and placed in unlabelled plastic bags, in contravention to the laws of Guyana Food and Drug Act.
Importers and distributors are being advised to desist from this which can result in the department having to rescind their Licenses, Permits to Repackage, and / or import wheat flour in 45 Kg bags.
Similar exercises will be conducted in out`lying areas and regions and a National Food Safety and Control Committee Meeting which will be hosted on July 9, 2019, to ensure the department enforcement action in their respective regions.
Members of the general public are also advised to purchase this commodity in properly labelled bags in the very best interest of their health and safety.
