The West Indies duo of the middle order batsman Shimron Hetmyer and left arm medium pacer Erva Giddings carried home the prestigious Male and Female Cricketers of the Year Awards on Sunday last as the Hilbert Foster led Berbice Cricket Board held its 2nd Brian Ramphal Awards Ceremony. The colourfully decorated Port Mourant Cricket Club Hall was packed to capacity as the Berbice Cricket Board honoured its outstanding performers on and off the cricket field. The gala ceremony was sponsored by overseas based Guyanese Brian Ramphal with support from the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, MS and other sponsors as the Berbice Cricket Board invested over $600,000 into the well organised event.
BCB President Hilbert Foster provided a comprehensive report on the work of his administration over the last seventeen months and the rebirth of Berbice Cricket after a long period of dormancy. The Berbice Cricket Board has organised over 40 tournaments at all levels, raised over $17M in cash and kind, organised dozens of developmental programmes and assisted clubs with scorebooks, cricket gears, stumps, cricket balls, weather coats, trophies, medals among others.
Youth cricketers also benefitted from donations of personal gears, while among the developmental programme were the Dr. Tulsi Dyal Singh Coaching Programme, Dr. Puran Singh National Players Financial Scheme, Coaching Clinics, Educational Posters, Inter county Cap System among dozens others. Foster hailed the cooperation of numerous sponsors, media personnel and cricket officials.
Foster, who recently received a National Award, disclosed that Berbice Cricket over the next six months would undergo even more changes including the hosting of at least fifteen tournaments, assistance to clubs, BCB 80th Anniversary Celebration and more Coaching Programmes across Berbice.
Regional Vice Chairman Dennis Deroop, Regional Chairman David Armogan, Mayor of New Amsterdam Ms. Winifred Haywood also spoke at the Programme and hailed the outstanding work of the current Executives of the Berbice Cricket Board.
Armogan noted that Berbice Cricket has a rich legacy to uphold and urged the current players to always represent the Ancient County with pride and passion. Both Deroop and Armogan pledged their support to the Berbice Cricket Board in its effort to develop the game at the grassroot. The Berbice Cricket Board handed over Cricket bats to West Indies Under-15 Selectees Rampersaud Ramnauth and Isaiah Thorne, weather coats to the Albion Ground Staff, cricket balls to thirteen clubs, while members of the winning Berbice Under-19 and Female Senior Teams were honoured. MVP of both teams Erva Giddings and Junior Sinclair each received a $20,000 bicycle. Each member of the teams carried home a tr
ophy and medal, while the Upper Corentyne Cricket Association also honoured its outstanding performers for 2018. A total of 64 cricket officials, media personnel, media houses and sponsors were honoured including Vemen Walters, Orvin Mangru, Dr. Cecil Beharry, Dennis D’Andrade, Sydney Jackman, Vickram Suebarran, Angela Haniff, Andre Percival, Winston Smith, Lakeram Latchman and Slyvia Autar. Among the numerous sponsors honoured were Brian Ramphal, Dr. Tulsi Dyal Singh, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Magic Moments, New Building Society and New York Business Group.
