As the tenth annual GBTI Open Tennis tournament heads for a conclusion with what is anticipated to be an entertaining Final of the Men’s Singles, action continued at the GBTI Courts on Friday night with the pair of Gavin Lewis and Daniel Lopes winning the Men’s doubles title.
Played under overcast skies, the 22-year-old pair of Lewis and Daniel Lopes beat Daniel’s uncle 56-year-old Andre Lopes and 24-year-old Gregorie Vincent, 7-5, 6-1under floodlights to claim their first GBTI Open title.
The first set was tight with neither team letting up on opportunities and trading breaks of serves.
Vincent/Andre Lopes took the break and went up 4-3 and Lewis/ Daniel Lopes broke back to tie and 4-4. Both sides held serve to 5-5 and Lewis/Daniel Lopes took the next two games in tight deuce points to take the set 7-5.
Daniel Lopes stands at front court as Gavin Lewis plays backhand in the Men’s doubles against Andre Lopes and Gregoire Vincent (blocked by Lopes) on Friday Night.
In the second set, Vincent and Andre Lopes were outplayed as Lewis/ Daniel Lopes hardly let up points and forced the errors from Vincent/Andre Lopes to clinch a 6-1 second set and the men’s doubles final to win the match.
Earlier, in the Novice Medley, Alvin Doris and Simone Boucher got a walkover from Dorothy Kalekyezi and Christine Daly to win the title in that division.
The Mixed doubles was scheduled for last night, while Lewis is favoured for this Evening’s Men’s Singles final before the Medal presentation is held. (Sean Devers)
