Cristy Campbell teamed up with Afruka Gentle to beat Fiona Bushell/Shelly Daley 6-1, 6-1 in Women’s Doubles final when the action continued in the tenth annual GBIT Open on Tuesday night at the GBTI Lawn Tennis Court in Bel Air.
Anthony Downes, who dominated local Tennis for close to decade before being dethroned when 22-year-old Gavin Lewis beat him in a pulsating Men’s Singles final on Monday night, has withdrawn from the remainder of this tournament.
On Tuesday Night, Downes and Rebecca Mitchell were set to face-off with Heimraj Resaul and Kalyca Fraser in the Mixed Doubles resulting in the later pair winning by a walkover.
Playing in their sixth Women’s Doubles as a pair, Campbell and teenager Gentle, unbeaten since they started playing as a pair, lost the racquet spin and Daly/Bushell chose to serve.
Daly opened serve for the pair as she has a heavy spin serve which moves away from opponents with the pace.
The Daly/Bushell went up to 30-0 in the first game when Gentle hit an inside out rocket forehand to Bushell to claim the first point for Campbell/Gentle.
The next 3 points were won by Campbell/Gentle, securing the early break. Campbell then opened service for the pair as both sides came to the net settling in play and exchanging hard hitting rallies.
The Campbell/Gentle pair held serve and ran up to a 5-0 lead.
In the sixth game, Daly/Bushell sneaked in some crafty drop shots after pushing Campbell/Gentle on the baseline to register their first game and break for the Campbell, Gentle pair for a 5-1 score.
Campbell/Gentle returned the favour in the next game to close out the set at 6-1.
Second set, Campbell/Gentle started off to a 2-0 score before Daly/Bushell secured the third game and the score at 2-1 with the switch over.
Campbell/Gentle and Daly/Bushell exchanged hard hitting baseline rallies, volleys and drop shots in a match which started at 5: PM.
When the dust was settled, Campbell/Gentle were the victors 6-1/6-1 to clinch their sixth doubles title.
The game between Gregoire Vincent and Joshua Kalekyezi, Vincent was leading 7-5, 6-5 when the game was halted due to time and should have been completed yesterday.
In the other uncompleted game, Gavin Lewis/Afruka Gentle leads Leyland Leacock/Kizzy Richmond 6-1, 1-2 in the Mixed doubles.
