After day four on Tuesday was completely washed out due to a flooded Guyana Bank of Industry and Commerce (GBTI) Lawn Tennis Court, the tenth annual GBTI Open Tennis tournament sprung back to life under sunny skies on Wednesday with number one seed Cristy Campbell playing her first game in the Women’s singles.
Campbell, who had teamed up with top female Junior player Afruica Gentle to win the Women’s doubles o
n Monday, got the better of Kizzy Richmond, 6-0,6-1.
Campbell broke Richmond’s first game of the first set and rushed through the set in about 25 minutes; moving her around the court with well executed drop shots, deep forehands before moving her to net for the volley.
In the second set, Campbell, arguable the fittest female player locally, went up 2-0, breaking Richmond first game again and holding serve.
The third game went to deuce as the spirted Richmond retaliated when she hit some fierce down the line backhands to claim her first game of the match.
But Campbell then held serve with some heavy top spin forehand shots to keep Richmond deep in the courts.
Hard hitting and big serving Gregiore Vincent defeated Heimraj Resaul 6-1, 6-1.Resaul got into several rallies but Vincent ended the point first and consistently kept his opponent on
the back foot with plenty of hard severing and power hitting from both players.
Vincent’s performance makes him an early favourite for the GBTI title but he must get past other known power hitters like Gavin Lewis and Anthony Downes who are on the other side of the draw.
Vadeannand Resaul beat Viraj Sharma 6-3, 6-1. Vadeannand, the younger brother of Heimraj Resaul, registered his first win over Sharma who beat him at the recently concluded Sheltez tournament.
Resaul was the more aggressive player and forced the much older Sharma up to the net before lobbing the ball over his head in
addition to several hard serves and vicious forehand shots.
Joshua Kelekyezi beat Benjettan Osbourne 6-0, 6-2 as he clearly went into the match with a game plan and executed it well. Targeting the backhand of Osbourne and eventually breaking him down to hit the ball to net or out of the Court.
Orande Dainty got a walk-over from Johnathon Fagundes in the other scheduled match of the night.
Action on day six was scheduled to commence at 4:00PM yesterday and conclude under lights weather permitting. (Sean Devers)
