The University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) in collaboration with the Nand Persaud Group of Companies (NPGC) through the Nand Persaud Foundation, has broken new grounds.
It staged a one-day workshop on local medicinal plants uses.
The activity was held at the Nand Persaud Conference Hall, No36 Village Corentyne, Berbice, under the theme “Identification and Environmental Protection of Ingenious (local) Medicinal Plants and their uses for Human Health”.
The organiser and main lecturer was Professor Gomathinayagam Subramanian, Director of the University of Guyana Berbice campus.
The activity was jointly coordinated by Dr. Subramanian and Mohendra Persaud, General Manager of the NPGC and Foundation.
Persaud stated that the NPGC is known for venturing into areas that others do not and doing things differently.
“Another of our philosophy is doing things on a large scale and giving back to the community from where we garner our support.”
He said that giving back does not only mean money, but doing thing that people can benefit from.
We realize that there are a lot of things that can be done and a lot of opportunities in Berbice and Guyana as a whole.
“The simple plants around can be of tremendous benefits to persons, in the form of medicine and other products”. So we thought that we will make use of the UGBC presence and do a seminar on the use and benefits of the plants.
At the end the activity, persons are expected to benefit tremendously and know about the many benefits that can be derived from the use of some simple plants around, be healthier and save tremendous on cost.
“People would visit the Pharmacy on a regular basis and purchase medication for various reasons. If you can do something for yourself, by using some of the same plants as medications, you would save on cost.
We also know that most medications have side effects, but using plants, we are certain there are not going to be any side effects”.
He is assuring persons that they can live healthier, which is the main objective of doing the programme.
Professor Gomathinayagam Subramanian stated that it is always a pleasure working with a renowned organisation like the NPGC. He assured that he is always willing to assist and share his knowledge in whatever ways possible.
Participants were given a certificate at the end of the workshop.
