Day four of the tenth annual ‘GBTI Open’ Tennis tournament at the Bank’s Lawn Tennis Court in Bel Air served off just after 4:PM in glorious weather on Monday with the match-up between Joshua Kelekyezi and Viraj Sharmaand Vadeannand Resaul and Jeremiah Kelekyezi, which was halted on Sunday night with the score reading 6-4, 2-1.
With the Kelekyezi siblings on opposing sides, it was the pair which included older brother, Joshua, which would prevail in the hot conditions as Joshua and Viraj won 6-4, 6-4.
Played simultaneously on Court two, Andre Lopes and Gregiore Vincent defeated Benjethan Osbourne and Kevin Matai 6-1, 6-1.
The women’s mixed doubles, which pitted number one seeded Women’s racquet ace Cristy Campbell and top Junior player Afruica Gentle against Diana Bharat and Kizzy Richmond, was predictable dominated by the more skilful and experienced pair of Campbell and Gentle, who eventually emerged victorious 6-0, 6-0.
The most threatening game for the winners was the sixth, in the second set, when the powerful Gentle, a member of Guyana Women’s cricket Squad, had three double faults.
Bharat and Richmond held the advantage to take the game with a hard return of serve from Richmond which Campbell, the sister of National Cricketer Robin Bacchus, hit down the line to Bharat who sent the volley into net to get the score back to deuce.
But that was to be the last chance of glory for Bharat and Richmond as the next two points were straight forward serves and returns with Gentle and Campbell hitting volleys to close out the one-side contest.
Devon Gonsalves/Aubrey Young defeated Jonathon Fagundes, one of Guyana’s leading middle distance athletes who also competes in cycling and debutant Matthew Yusuf 6-1/6-2.
But the pair of Fagundes and new comerYusuf, showed plenty of fight and resilienc
e against the experienced pair and received much support from the gathering.
Meanwhile, in other results of the night, Simone Boucher got a Walk Over from Akilah Jones, Joseph Dejonge defeated Jeremiah Kelekyezi 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 and Surindra and Adesh Khayyam defeated Dominic Fraser and Khalif Gobin 6-4, 6-4.
Tournament action was cancelled yesterday due to the heavy rainfall which left the venue flooded at the scheduled start time. Weather permitting action could resume today.
