Regal Masters have sounded a stern warning to their rivals who will be competing in the upcoming New York Softball Cricket League tournament with a comprehensive victory over Wellman Masters in the final of the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc Independence Cup on Sunday.
Led by an unbroken 158-run second wicket stand between Essequibian Ramesh Deonarine and Troy Kippins, Regal Masters won the encounter by nine wickets at the Everest Cricket Club.
Earlier, Regal Masters earned their berth in the final with a 44-run victory over Ariel Masters, while Wellman Masters booked their passage to the last two following a 15-run win over Fisherman Masters, who will be making their debut in the NYSCL competition, which is set to commence on June 28.
Batting first in the grand finale, Wellman Masters posted 164-7 from their allocation of 20 overs. Openers Mahase Chunilall and Greg De Franca added 56 before De Franca was dismissed for 25 which came off 19 balls and contained one four and two sixes. Chunilall struck one four and three maximums before he departed for 35 off 31 balls. Wellman Masters then lost Lloyd Ruplall (04) and Latchman Kallicharran (03); however Nandram Samlall, Eon Lovell and Wayne Jones propped up the total with useful contributions.
Samlall slammed four fours and one six in scoring 30, while Lovell scored 23 including two fours and a similar number of sixes and Jones made 18 with two fours. Fazleem Mohamed captured 2-30; David Harper had 2-37, while there was one wicket each for Roy Persaud, Parsram Persaud and Kippins.
Regal Masters suffered an early setback in the chase when they lost Eon Abel (00) caught off De Franca with the score on seven in the second over. But fellow opener Kippins and the left-handed Deonarine united to see their team home without further hiccups. The duo rotated the strike well and was quick to dispatch the bad balls, picking the gaps with precision as Regal Masters won the encounter with three overs to spare.
Deonarine clobbered one four and 10 sixes to finish on 95 which came off 54 balls, while the right-handed Kippins slammed five fours and four sixes in scoring 60 off 43 balls as their team ended on 165-1.
De Franca had 1-30. Deonarine was named man-of-the-match, while Regal Masters collected a trophy and $53,000 and Wellman Masters received a trophy. The competition was sponsored by Regal Stationery and Computer Centre and Trophy Stall Bourda Market.
