DEAR EDITOR,
Sometime ago, I wrote to Kaieteur News (letter never published) in which I advised Guyanese to stay away from Guyana. Now, our State Department has issued a warning in which travellers are urged to exercise increased caution while visiting Guyana. According to the State Department, the increased caution is due to crime. “Violent crime, such as armed robbery and murder, is common. Local police lack the resources to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents.” I read most of the publications from a Guyana online daily and there are so many reports of murder, rape, armed robbery, escape of prisoners, arson, and many other such crimes. According to the local news outfits, many of these crimes are being committed by officers from the Guyana Police Force and by soldiers from the Guyana Defence Force. What a shame!
Guyanese living abroad often go back to visit relatives or on holiday only to get robbed or killed. A visitor’s passport recently disappeared at Customs and Immigration at the local airport, and that visitor had to spend an extra week in Guyana. Many visitors were robbed between the local airport and their destination. Several visitors were robbed and killed in Georgetown and in Berbice. A group stopped at a restaurant on their way from the airport and all their belongings were stolen. The list goes on and on, yet, the number of visitors to Guyana, sadly, has increased.
Thousands of Guyanese now enjoy a life of plenty in America and in Canada and often must overlook the financial and physical factors and criminal elements to visit family members and relatives that have so little in Guyana. These visitors leave their homes with so much expectations, only to be robbed or killed in Guyana.
I urge ALL Guyanese living in America and in Canada to take the warning from our State Department seriously. If you really want to help your family members in Guyana, send cash. It is so easy to do so now. Guyana is a lawless country…Robbers and murderers roam the streets from the airport to the city, night and day. These criminals thrive on Guyanese visitors especially. There are so many beautiful places to see and enjoy in America and in Canada; Disney in Florida, Las Vegas in Nevada, the Grand Canyon in Arizona or Niagara Falls in Canada. Stay away from Guyana. Armed robbery and murder is an everyday occurrence. You may reach Guyana, but may not return.
Sincerely,
Mohamed Majeed
