The Diamond Worship Centre which is an outstation of the Newtown Assemblies of God Church, yesterday held a health fair at its Third Avenue Diamond, East Bank Demerara location for residents within the community.
The health fair, which was done in collaboration with the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, formed part of the church’s seventh anniversary observance.
A number of residents were able to benefit from the several services offered, which also included a blood drive. Other services included HIV Counselling and Testing, VIA testing, Dentistry, eye examination, general medicine, diabetes and hypertension testing, among others.
Head of the Church, Deacon Lance Persaud, said that each year for the past seven years the church has been holding community oriented activities to form part of its anniversary celebrations.
He said that this year is no different and while the church has held health fairs before, this year’s was broadened to accommodate more services and persons
“This is the outstation, and we have this going on for the past seven years and we usually do community service. One year we would do deeper life ministries and another year we w
ould do health fair, and this is the year for the health fair,” Deacon Persaud said.
He pointed out that the church values the support and involvement of the community and while the primary objective is always to win persons for Christ, he firmly believes that being able to partner and assist with growth and development within the community is of paramount importance.
“We represent a church and are responsible for doing things in a spiritual way but we also want to do things that are social, mental and physical, and if you recognise we are providing a number of services to the community, thus being a real friend to the community,” he stressed.
Persaud said, too, that while they have been organising a number of church related activities, the church is also mandated to execute community based initiatives and projects as they seek to forge a much closer relationship with the community.
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you… and so we want the community to benefit from some of these activities as we are concerned about our neighbours as we see the community as our friend,” he declared
Deacon Persaud spoke about the importance of community development, primarily from the angle of churches, noting that the churches should play a greater role in this area.
He said, “Churches are basically community based and we take people from the community and we help to transform their lives… so we just can’t dwell only on the spiritual aspect because they would like to know that they have a friend and that they have someone who they can sit and talk with without feeling pressured.
“We ought to know that God is important but at the same time they must feel that they can come and talk to us on whatever it is that may be bothering them,” he stressed.
He added, “If you look at the ratio now of young people being involved in crime, you would recognise that it is growing so these are some of the things that we need to get involved in, not just church.”
Deacon Persaud said that while the health fair ran from 9 am to 3pm, he is satisfied that a number of persons came out. The church official noted that while some of the services that were provided were sought after more than others, he felt satisfied that they had reached out to a community who evidently seemed very grateful and attended in their numbers.
He expressed the desire for more churches to do similar events, stating that they can work more in-depth in their respective communities. Meanwhile, he announced that the church’s anniversary service would be held next Sunday (June 9) at 2pm.
