Persons who were at Port Mourant, Corentyne; Berbice yesterday welcomed an outreach held by a businessman and three youngsters.
The outreach which focused on Domestic Violence started a movement which individuals claimed was highly needed.
Two weeks ago businessman, Randy Shepherd, decided to make a change about the dreaded social issue of Domestic Violence.
In a charge to put an end to this unpleasant dilemma, he posted a logo standing against the issue on his car. It has since caught the eyes of many who wish to join his movement. Shepherd stated that in Berbice the initiative was also well received.
Shepherd stated, “We set up tent at Spready’s Supermarket, Port Mourant, Corentyne. As soon as persons were aware as to why we were there we received a warm welcome.”
“Persons said that it was a great idea that is highly needed. They even raised some concerns that they are facing in their communities. As such they asked if we can have an outlet in that area to aid with bringing awareness to the people.
The burning concern on every person’s lips, basically, was getting the police to respond to Domestic Violence reports.
“Many asked for an outlet because they claim that they need somewhere to report such issues. (The person) in turn will get the police to respond to their report. They say that often time when they try to contact the police it is difficult to get to them or for the police to go to a location,” Shepherd stated.
The next concern was a need for awareness. It was noted that persons took the time out from their busy errands to listen to anything said about the matter. They collected fliers, car bumper stickers and even shared some of their own personal views to add to the awareness.
“I am trying to start an NGO as advised. However, this initiative is a sacrifice it is not for fame or in any way related to that. What I want to see is a change in society as to Domestic Violence.”
The youngsters with Shepherd went as far as moving from their fixed point to speak with businesspersons to be able to place posters on their business entity and other places.
The youngsters, Nicola Munroe, Calvin Roberts and Tanisha Kingston, met with Shepherd via Facebook. They decided to join his bandwagon and are very passionate about what they are trying to make a stand in.
Roberts said, “As a volunteer this is my first time tackling a social issue and I feel great being a part of something that is geared toward bringing awareness in this nature. I also liked that it was well received.”
Kingston added, “It was very interesting to me because from that simple outreach we met so many people who shared a lot and it in turn helped me to better understand Domestic Violence.”
“I believe from this we still need to do so much more because persons need to be aware. I would say it was life changing as it just made me want to do more.”
Munroe said, “I lost my mother and sister-in-law to this. It was emotional and overwhelming for me to reach out to others to help them know that one needs to put themselves first. No one is responsible for your happiness.”
