– over 24,000 attended show
It was dubbed the ‘I Am Legend Concert’, and it surpassed all expectations.
It featured iconic Reggae Superstar Buju Banton, and even after it ended, fans were screaming his name and demanding that he return to the stage.
The show at the National Stadium started early and saw patrons rushing to get a good view of the stage in whichever section they purchased tickets for.
Early entertainment was done by Guyanese DJs inclusive of the Boom DJs and the show was hosted by HJ’s very own DJ Akelo.
There were three sections; General, VIP and VVIP even though ticket prices went up, all three sections were overcrowded and it was difficult to manoeuvre in the crowd.
The crowd was well engaged and ready for Buju who did at the time he was scheduled to.
Instead, 19-year-old reggae sensation Koffee surprised the audience when she appeared on stage. Many seemed awe –struck as she belted the lyrics to her hit song ‘Toast’, among others, and many in the audience were questioning if they were listening to a recording. The crowd was at this point well energised as they sang along with the artiste.
After Koffee’s performance, everything went silent at around 01:30 as the introductory track to Buju’s hit song ‘Our Father in Zion’ began and the crowd went wild as his captivating vocals joined in on the track.
The stadium was brightly lit by thousands of cell phone lights that illuminated the stage. As he energetically ran onstage, fireworks went up after which he greeted his fans and wished Guyana a Happy Independence and the performance, which will be talked about for months and will go down in history began.
His stage performance was nothing short of the legend he is and he made sure to include Guyanese and the country’s name in his songs frequently. Some of the songs performed included, It’s Not an Easy Road, I Wanna Be Loved, Destiny, Give I Strength and Driver.
There were a few solos by the saxophonist and guitarists as he stopped to catch his breath and they didn’t disappoint. His three female backup singers did great harmonisation to his voice and were very energetic as they did their choreographed moves.
The performance lasted for approximate two and a half hours. That was not long enough for the fans who demanded that he return to the stage.
By this time, the star was soaked in perspiration and his shirt clung to his skin.
Hits and Jams Entertainment thanked the government, private sector and the citizens for their support as they announced that over 24,000 persons were in the stadium at the said time.
