DEAR EDITOR,
In the past few weeks, the police have come under pressure for what appeared to be a rise in crime. There were a number of murders, albeit domestic, and home invasion, especially in Berbice.
It seems never a day went by without news of some horrendous attack. The focus appeared to be in Berbice.
A popular businessman, my neighbour at the Harbour Bridge Mall, lost his grandson after he was attacked at Bagotstown.
This week started with news that a West Bank mother was killed and her taxi stolen.
On Sunday, there was news coming from Berbice that three men, all with criminal records, were killed during a confrontation with police behind Black Bush Polder, a known farming community.
The police recovered a cache of weapons and ammo, cash, bulletproof vests and other items.
Berbicians were loud in praise of the police.
Mr. Editor, we know that the police are criticised from time to time. However, for the police to track down these men, said to be highly dangerous and well equipped, would speak volumes of increased capacity and strategic crime fighting.
They converted intelligence and it appears with cooperation from citizens. The other murders, save for the female taxi driver from West Bank, appears to have been solved. There was an execution on Monday evening in the East La Penitence area. The police are working.
When nothing is happening and there are a few incidents of crime, the police are blamed for what appears to be a spree.
The fact is, Mr Editor, the police force has been working hard to improve its image. There will be a few loose ranks. There is no excuse.
Crimes are being solved and the police, for their operations in Berbice, must be lauded.
They have managed to bring back ease to a community that was being terrorised.
There will be pockets of criminals out there.
The police force must be encouraged. They must be told too that they have done well from time to time.
