A man-of-the- match performance from Matthew Nandu spearheaded the National U-17s to 42-run win over Essequibo at Bourda yester
day in the second round of the Hand-in-Hand Inter-County 50-overs U-19 Cricket tournament.
Andre Seepersaud hit two fours and a six from 68 balls in his unbeaten 38 while the elegant Movindra Dindyal reached the boundary thrice and cleared it once in his 77-ball 32. But only Nandu of the other batsmen reached double figures with 18 (3×4) from 41 balls as the U-17s slipped from 77-1 to 135-9 off 47 overs.
Amit Persaud had 3-27 from 10 overs, Mahesh Ramnarine took 3-19 from 9 overs while Lance Roberts was excellent with 1-6 from 10 frugal overs for Essequibo in a game reduced to 47 overs due to mid-morning showers.
When Essequibo began their hunt of a revised target of 138 on the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern system, they slumped from 72 -2 and were eventually dismissed for 96 in 30.5 overs. Jerimiah Scott hit an entertaining 26-ball 33 (2×4 1×6) but only opener Leon Christian (23) and Roberts (14) of the others reached double figures as Nandu captured 5-20 from 10 overs while Chanderpaul Ramraj supported with 2-16 from 10, handing Essequibo their second consecutive defeat.
In overcast conditions, the U-17s opted to bat and lost Zynul Ramsammy (5) when he was bowled by Scott at 24-1. Nandu and Dindyal carried their team 77 but off-spinners Persaud and Roberts, bowling in tandem, had the batsmen in shackles as they struggled to get the ball off the square.
Persaud removed Nandu and the burly Azizi Christian, who looked out of place at this level, for a duck with the score on 77 before Roberts induced Dindyal, whose stroke-play brought back memories of Ramnaresh Sarwan, to hit the ball to deep mid-wicket after he got himself bugged down by the spin on a track which provided slow turn and kept low at times.
From 79-4 the U-17s, beaten by Demerara in the first round at Everest on Monday, lost wickets at regular intervals with only Seepersaud looking willing to counter attack towards the end. After Chetram Balgobin (2) was run out at 97-7 he good support from Ramraj (6) and Ajay Gainda (2) took the score to 135 before Ramnarine removed both.
When Essequibo replied, the consistent Orlando Jailall (1) tugged a ball from Jagesh Dowlatram to wide mid-wicket, an area he been caught at far too frequently and his demise left the score on 19-1.
Leon Christian tucked Dowlatram for a couple before cutting him effortlessly to the point boundary while Scott looked aggressive from his first ball. The right-hander who plays his club cricket for city side Malteenoes, lofted Dowlatram over extra cover for six before driving him all along the ground on the slow outfield for an imperious boundary off the next ball.
The pair added 40 for the second wicket before the ‘Matthew Nandu show’ began when Scott was bowled at 60-2. When Christian was bowled by Ramraj who also sent back Amir Singh (9) Essequibo were 79-4 and never recovered despite Roberts’ brief resistance as the last six batsmen just managed a run between them.
