Denzel Benjamin, a 19-year-old unemployed youth who lives with his aunt at Robb Street Lacytown, yesterday appeared before the Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where he was granted bail on a simple larceny charge.
It is alleged that on May 6, 2019 at Robb and King Streets, Georgetown, he stole from Savita Singh, one Samsung S7 cell phone owned by Shavindra Ramraj.
The defendant pleaded not guilty.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield informed the court that the defendant was charged on more than one occasion for similar offences. However, at the point in time of the hearing he could not say if Benjamin was ever convicted on any of the charges.
According to the facts of the charge, on the day in question Ramraj, who was in the company of his fiancée, Singh, stopped their motor car at the corner of Robb and King Street where they exited the vehicle.
Singh allegedly exited the vehicle with the cell phone in her possession. Benjamin, who was reportedly standing at the corner of the streets, approached Singh and snatched the phone from her. He then ran in a southern direction making good his escape.
On May 10, 2019 the defendant was pointed out by Singh as the person who robbed her and as such he was charged for the present offence.
When asked what he had to say for himself, the defendant stated that he is gay and the places he applied for a job usually deny him work.
Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan then stated, “You need to work and get your life together, instead of depending on your aunt, only.”
He was then granted bail in a sum of $50,000 under the condition that he does not leave his home from 6pm to 6am. The matter was then adjourned to May 20, 2019.
