A farmer from Richmond Hill, Leguan, was yesterday slapped with a murder charge after he allegedly lashed a man off of his motorcycle and into a trench.
The 46- year-old defendant, Philip Jhagroo, did not plead to the charge which was made indictable after it was read to him by the Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It was alleged that between March 30, 2019 and March 31, 2019 at School Dam, Richmond Hill, Leguan, he murdered Mark Narine, called ‘Marko’.
Police prosecutor Stacey Gittens told the court that during the period mentioned in the charge, the 22-year-old victim was riding his motorcycle heading home.
While on his journey, the defendant allegedly lashed Narine off of his motorcycle. The victim’s body was subsequently found the next day in a trench. According to an autopsy, Narine died from drowning but he had wounds to his head consistent with being lashed with something.
After listening to the information presented to the court, Magistrate McLennan remanded the defendant to prison. The matter was adjourned until May 30 next where the hearing will continue at the Leguan Magistrate’s Courts.
Relatives of the deceased claimed that Narine did jail time for someone over drugs. It is believed Narine was killed because he was owed and had been demanding his money.
According to the family it is believed that the police were reluctant to make arrests because the people involved were in ‘bad businesses’.
They said that the police were treating the issue as a drowning even before the autopsy was carried out.
