Michael Anthony of Linden made sure that his close to 100 miles sojourn to Berbice to compete in the Phillip Arokium Memorial 50-Mile Cycle race in Berbice on Sunday last was not in vain as he out dueled the rest of the field to emerge victorious.
Anthony won in a time of two hours, 12 minutes and 11 seconds in a fierce battle from Berbician Andrew Hicks.
The cycle race, which was staged in honour of late proprietor of the Arokium Funeral Establishment, was organised by the Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC).
The cyclists pedaled off at 10:00 hrs from Main and Alexander, Street New Amsterdam, after the riders were sent on their way by Managing Director of the Arokium Funeral Establishment Mrs. Pearl Arokium. The riders then proceeded to the Nand Persaud Rice Milling Complex at Number 36 Village, Corentyne, before turning back to finish at its place of origin.
There were a few mini breaks, until Anthony and Hicks took over. The two cyclists then led for most of the event until their fierce duel to the end of the contest, which had most spectators at the finish line on their toes. Two more Berbicians, Andre ‘Padlock’ Greene, and Balram Narine occupied the third and fourth spots. Marcus Keiler was the fifth to cross the line with Christopher Griffith sixth, Ajay Gopilall seventh and Ralph Sewnarine eighth rounding out the top finishers.
In the veterans category, the ever green Junior Niles won from Paul Choo-Wee-Nam and Jaikaran Sookhai. Mario Washington was the first juvenile to cross as David Hicks and Steve Bhimsen occupied the next two spots.
Aronraj Narine was the top rider among the U14 competitors with Shazim Yakub and Malachi Devanand occupying the other two spots.
The females had their own duel as Shemika Teixeira won from Deancea Welch and Maria Carrington. They rode from Benjamin’s Sports Store at Fyrish Corentyne to the finish line.
There was a special category for riders of the FACC and the first three to cross the finishing line were Narine, Sewnarine and Clement Doris.
The sprint prizes were shared by Hicks and Anthony three each, Deoraj Goberdan two, and Balram Narine and Dey one each. In addition to his winnings, Anthony received an addition $5,000 from Mrs. Arokium for his sprinting at the end.
The Managing Director stated that she was very impressr with the way the event was organised and the performance of the cyclist and has promised to sponsor an even bigger event in December.
The event was coordinated by Coach Randolph Roberts and cycling official Joseph Britton. (Samuel Whyte)
