At its annual Mother’s Day luncheon, the Department of Education of Region Four recognised a number of mothers working within
the department.
The event was graced with the presence of Regional Chairperson, Ms. Genevieve Allen, who is referred to as the mother of the region, and Regional Executive Officer, Ms. Pauline Lucas.
The initiative was crystallised by Acting Regional Education Officer, Ms. Tiffany Harvey.
At the event, the importance of the contributions of the mothers was highlighted with Allen declaring that mothers are the ones who generally hold families together because they are the ones who continuously make untold sacrifices.
She urged them to continue embracing motherhood adding that being a mother is a great honour and should never be taken lightly.
“I would like to say that irrespective of who don’t like or appreciate me. I am not concerned but what matters the most is knowing that the children that I bore for nine months can continue to love and express their love to me.
“That is what gives me the greatest appreciation,” Allen said.
Many mothers, she said, are often forced to play both roles of mother and father. She, however, said that mothers around the world and, more so, in Guyana continue to make significant contributions to the growth and development of their communities, families and most importantly country.
“Motherhood is a fantastic feeling and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I feel honoured being a mother and I urge you mothers to ensure that you are pampered as being a mother is such a great blessing.
“I lost my mother in 1998 and there isn’t a day that goes by without me missing my mother,” Allen said.
REO Lucas shared some of her own experiences pointing out that while she only has one biological child, she continues to be the mother of some 15 godchildren. She also provided monthly support to a number of others.
“It’s a great feeling and experience and as we celebrate this important day. It allows us as mothers to reflect on our own lives and those of our children and others who you may have impacted upon,” she said.
She told the gathering that many times the roles of mothers are taken for granted, stressing that a mother’s contribution cannot be counted. She made reference to Allen’s comments that mothers are often lawyers, disciplinarians, doctors, nurses, judges and most importantly the first teachers in a child’s life.
Harvey in alluding to the observance of the Mother’s Day, said that it is a very important event that she looks forward to organising each year.
She thanked the many others who work in her department, while congratulating Danicia George, who is expected to deliver soon. She offered words of comfort and advice to the young lady urging her to value the blessing that she has and to recognise that irrespective of her child’s age she will always be his/her mother.
“I am so excited to welcome Miss George to motherhood and to say that it’s a journey that never ends because even when your child moves on with their own family, you remain their mother still. Congratulations, my daughter. I see you as my own child,” she declared.
Harvey also spoke about the importance of fathers, noting that because of fathers there can be mothers. “I would like to thank the men who have made us mothers as we know that without fathers there can be no mothers,” she said.
The mothers were each given a gift hamper to celebrate their motherhood.
Additionally, Allen, Lucas and the secretary to the REdO, Allison Hoppie, were each presented with gifts for their roles as mothers and more so for making significant contributions to the department.
