Following a conclusion of the three-day version which was won by defending champions Berbice, the Hand-in-Hand Inter County U19 50-over tournament will commence today with Essequibo facing Berbice at Albion and the Select U17 playing Demerara at Everest.
While the three-day version was plagued by rain, the players will be hoping for an improved weather so that they can get a get more opportunities to impress for a pick on the national U17 and U19 teams.
Rain forced a draw between Essequibo and the U17s in the final round of the three-day format at Everest, while the clash between Demerara and Berbice at Lusignan saw some sub standard performances by both teams. The encounter was a low scoring affair which was won by Berbice. Most of the players have represented Guyana at the age group levels before and no doubt have the talent to excel, but their performances have underlined the lack of commitment and discipline needed to succeed.
These players must realise that the selectors are using this tournament to select national teams and will be looking closely at their performances, commitment, discipline and eager to do well for their country, which should be taken into consideration as well.
Berbice team consists Kevlon Anderson, Alex Algoo, Junior Sinclair, Kelvin Umroa, Nigel Deodat, Garfield Benjamin and Seon Glasgow, while Demerara team includes Ashmead Nedd, Sachin Singh, Alphius Bookie, Pradesh Balkishun and Qumar Torrington-all players with national experience, however, their performances in the last round were highly unacceptable and these players must try to improve in the 50-over version.
Essequibo’s performance in this year’s tournament has also been below par with the Coach calling on the batsmen to apply themselves. Some changes are likely, however, it should be noted that two talented players who have represented Guyana at the U17 level previously, Reyaz Khan and Sylvan Williams are missing from their line-up, allegedly due to lack of communication with the ECB or their area committee.
The U17 side looked good with the likes of Marvan Prashad, Mavindra Dindyal, Zeynul Ramsammy, Matthew Nandu, Chanderpaul Ramraj and Andre Seepersaud giving a good account of themselves.
Play commences at 09:30hrs.
