It was all fun and excitement in Buxton, East Coast Demerara, on Friday as villagers, relatives and supporters gathered to celebrate the 107th birthday
of resident, Evadney Eldeca Talbot.
There she was dressed in her best outfit, smiling cheerily at her many supporters. The still alert woman exuded a certain merriment that seemed to add a distinct sparkle to her aging eyes.
And she was very conscious of the melee of happy villagers around her.
It was all smiles and kisses from everyone and Evadney seemed to bask in the fact that she was the very centre of attraction on such a happy occasion.
The still very active woman resides at 51 Company Road, Buxton, East Coast Demerara. She was born on May 10, 1912, to the late Louisa Hamer and Johnaton Watson of the said village.
Her only brother was Waddington Watson, who passed on some 30 years ago.
Evadney attended the Buxton Congregational School where she obtained a sound secondary education. After leaving school, she, as was the custom in the village, took up sewing, dress making, embroidery and crochet.
She was very competent in these areas and always fussed about having the correct and perfect finish to her items. She made some of the best outfits that some of her grandchildren still have in their possession today, according to relatives.
She was married to Kingsel Talbot who died in 1985. Their union had produced five children, two of whom are now deceased.
She has 16 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grand children. Evadney still has much life left in her and still maintains her small kitchen garden.
To maintain her health, she consumes fresh fruits and vegetables. Relatives ensure she maintains a healthy, balanced diet. She still loves her favourite spicy pork chops.
A few years gone by, she was a very active member of the Golden Age Club in Buxton.
Her very pretty outfit on her birthday was a present from ‘Classic Styles Boutique’ on Regent Street, Georgetown.
And she was of course surrounded by folks from UNESCO on her special day. Minister of Social Cohesion, Amna Ally was a special invitee.
Present at the festivities also was her close friend, Reverend Carl Peter, the Vicar of St. Augustine Anglican Church. (By Alex Wayne)
