Top notch cycling action returns to Berbice as all the leading cyclists in the country are expected to don their riding gear and head to the Ancient County for the Arokium Memorial Cycle road race today. The 50 miles event, which is sponsored by the Arokium Funeral Establishment, is in honour of late owner Mr. Phillip Arokium.
The race is being organised by the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) and Coordinated by Coach Mr. Randolph Roberts.
The race will commence at 10:00hrs with a cruise around the town of New Amsterdam from in front of Arokium Funeral Parlour at the lot 30 Philadelphia Street New Amsterdam. The cyclists will then turn left into Republic road, into Tacama turn into Stanleytown. The race officially starts when the cyclists cross Alexander Street and will proceed to Nand Persaud Rice Milling Complex at No 36 village, Corentyne before turning back to finish at Main and Alexander Street New Amsterdam.
Prizes will be awarded to the first eight finishers, first three veterans, top three juveniles and top three females. The first three FACC riders to cross the finish line will also be given prizes. There will also be ten sprint prizes up for grabs.
Managing Director of the Funeral Establishment, Mrs. Pearl Arokium and other family members, will be on hand to send the cyclists on their way and assist with the distribution of prizes at the completion of the event.
