The Guyana contingent complained over the poor level of officiating that robbed the male team their second victory at the recently concluded Inter Guiana’s U 21 male and female volleyball tournament which was held in French Guiana on the 3rd and 4th May, 2019.
The tournament which involved the three Guianas- Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, saw Guyana playing unbeaten in the two preliminary round matches against Suriname and French Guiana. Guyana then took on French Guiana in the best in five final in a ding dong affair which they lost 2-3 to the host after winning the first set. The scores were 25-17, 18-25, 25-18, 19-25 and 12-15.
At the end of the contest, dissatisfaction was aired by most in the arena including the technical official of the French Federation who promised that the next time around the competition will benefit from overseas officials. Guyana had earlier defeated French Guiana 25-21, 17-25 25- 19 and Suriname 25- 17 19-25 25- 21 in the preliminary matches to cop the runner up spot and take the trophy in that category.
Guyana’s captain Andy Rohoman was adjudged best attacker and was presented with a trophy, while Guyana’s Jaleel Roberts was adjudged best blocker and also received a trophy.
The females showed a lot of inexperience and did not jell well as they were defeated in the preliminary rounds by the more experienced French Guiana and Suriname teams.
The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) would like to extend thanks to the National Sports Commission for its support in making the trip the success it was.
