Maurice Cummings reigned supreme when he defeated Shavin Greene in the final enroute to victory in the Roger Bishop Linden Table Tennis Championships held on Saturday last at the McKenzie High school auditorium.
Staged by the Linden Table Tennis Steering committee and sponsored by Mr. Roger Bishop,
the competition attracted some of the crème de la crème of Linden table tennis players the likes of Raynor Copter Anderson, Marlon Washington, Shavin Greene and Maurice Cummings.
Eager for competition after a hiatus of competition in Linden and with senior players hungry to show who is the boss, the action began with a round robin format of 5 players in two groups.
Marlon Brando Washington and Ray Copter Anderson were No.1 seeds, advancing out of the group stage after defeating all comers to advance to the semifinals.
In the first semifinal, Shavin Greene, who came out second in group 1, defeated Marlon Washington by a 3-0 margin in the cross over of top seed versus second place in groups.
In the second semifinal, Maurice Cummings, who advanced as the second seeded player in group 2, defeated Raynor Anderson by a 3 matches to zero margin, to set up a final between himself and Shavin Greene of the young jaguars of Linden.
Greene and Cummings over the last few years have emerged as Linden top threats and have shared the spoils in different competitions. Their journey to the finals of this competition set up the scenario for another eagerly awaited encounter to see who would claim supremacy. In a very competitive and entertaining encounter, the dreadlock Cummings despite fierce and tactical play by Greene took his game up a notch and proved that he wanted the title more than Greene with some dazzling display of third ball attacks, winning the title by defeating Greene by a 3-1 margin 11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7.
Marlon Washington and Raynor Copter Anderson secured joint third positions.
In a simple presentation ceremony, Mr Haslyn Small, Head teacher of the Mackenzie High School presented the prizes to the winners to bring the curtains down on a fantastic evening of table tennis in the mining town.
The Committee’s next engagement will be the Linden Schools Table Tennis team and individual challenge scheduled for May 24th to 26th.
