A 55-year-old woman was yesterday sentenced to prison and fined for attempting to traffic cocaine on an outgoing international flight. In her defence the woman said that she was seeking money to replace a car her son allegedly damaged in an accident.
Sandra Angela Profitt, of John Fernandes Drive, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, pleaded guilty to the charge which alleged that on April 29, 2019 at Eugene F. Correia International Airport, Ogle East Coast Demerara, she had in her possession seven pounds of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The charge was read by Magistrate Rushell Liverpool at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Courts.
According to information, on the day in question, ranks from the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) approached the defendant who was an outgoing passenger on a Liat flight.
At the time Profitt was sitting in the departure lounge awaiting her flight. A search of her person revealed six parcels of cocaine strapped to her legs. Three were on each side.
CANU Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford told the court that Profitt has been cooperating with the investigation and she even revealed who supplied her with the narcotics.
CANU recently issued a wanted bulletin for Winston Carto also known as “Chief Mike” of Lot 193 Greenheart Street, South Ruimveldt Gardens. He is wanted for supplying Profitt with the cocaine.
When given an opportunity to speak Profitt told the court that her son was recently involved in a car accident and the car was badly damaged. She further stated that the owner demanded that he replace the car with a new one.
She added, “As a mother, I couldn’t sit and watch my son go through that, so I decided to do this to get some money.”
After listening to both sides, Magistrate Liverpool sentenced the defendant to serve four years in prison. She is to also pay a fine of $9.1M for attempting to traffic the illegal substance.
