Rain prevented a possible Berbice victory against the Select U17 team when the first round of the Hand-in-Hand Inter County U19 three-day tournament concluded yesterday. Set 313 to win in just over two sessions at Everest Cricket Club, the Select U17 were tottering on 17-3, when play was halted in the first session due to rain, resulting in 75 minutes of play being lost.
When play resumed in the second session, the U17s reached 39-3 before rain intervened once again and the game was subsequently called off at 15:14hrs.
Berbice pacer Leon Swamy made early inroads into the U17s second innings, removing three batsmen in quick succession. He first had opener Matthew Nandu caught at the wicket for 9 and uprooting the stumps of Azizi Christiani (00) before trapping Mavindra Dindyal (00) lbw; all three scalps fell with the score on 13.
Zeynul Ramsammy and Andre Seepersaud prevented further inroads as they added 26 for the fourth wicket before the rain came. Seepersaud hit three sweetly timed fours to remain unbeaten on 16 while Ramsammy was not out on 14. Swamy finished with 3-16 from six overs.
Earlier, Berbice resumed on their overnight score of 292-4 and declared in the first session on 404-5. Alex Algoo began the day on 119 and took his score to 175 before he was caught off Chanderpaul Ramraj; he clobbered 10 fours and seven sixes.
Garfield Benjamin remained unbeaten on 38 while Nigel Deodat made a quick fire 26 not out with three fours and two sixes. Niran Bissu and Ramraj took two wickets each. The second round will commence tomorrow with Berbice facing Essequibo at Lusignan and Demerara playing the U17 side at Bourda. (Zaheer Mohamed)
