The Guyana Rugby Football Union’s (GRFU) senior men’s 15s team that is popularly dubbed the ‘Green Machine’, proved to be a bit rusty for Guadeloupe who made light work of them yesterday, 19-5, for the Rugby Americas North (RAN) South Zone title.
Playing at the National Park’s athletics track under surprisingly lush sunshine following Thursday’s intermittent showers, the ‘newbies’ to the RAN championship were more compact than the apparent overconfident Guyanese.
Late in the first 40-minute half, Guadeloupe scored two tries and converted both to leave Guyana demoralised heading into the first period.
The first try was scored by Left Flanker, Pierre Brun, and his effort was converted by Thibaut Berthomieu, who

occupied the Fly Half position for the RAN South Zone champions who will now have to play Bermuda (North Zone Champions) next month for the overall title.
Breaking away down the right flank was Victor Jung, who breezed Guyana’s Full Back, Lancelot Adonis, with much ease to score the second try before Berthomieu converted again.
In the second half, the fresh legs of Full Back substitute, Hugo Delabroy, produced a blistering run down the right flank to give Guadeloupe their third try, but Berthomieu failed to convert for a third successive time.
O’Neil Charles scored the lone try for Guyana, while Adonis missed the conversion.
Coach of the team, Kenneth Grant-Stuart, who was confident Guyana could’ve gotten past the Frenchmen, spoke with Kaieteur Sport after the loss, “I Think our decision making was very poor. Guadeloupe didn’t play much but they deserved to win based to our poor decisions. It wasn’t fitness (on our part) and we had many opportunities to score. We got to regroup and come again.”

Luckily for the Guyanese, who are now on a miserable losing streak in the RAN championship, there will be no promotion or relegation after these matches, since 2020 is expected to be the first qualifying round for Rugby World Cup 2023 and as such, only full members of World Rugby will be able to compete in 2020.
