Timehri Panthers almost give it away and can count themselves lucky having squandered numerous chances but were still able to walk away victoriously and in the process sent Agricola Red Triangle packing when the GFF/KFC U20 Independence Cup, East Bank Football Association leg kicked off yesterday at the GFF Training Facility, Providence.
Following a very colourful march-past involving nine (9) of the 11 clubs that are participating, GFF President and KFC Ms. Charissa Rampersaud delivered remarks to those gathered before Ms. Rampersaud officially kicked off the EBFA leg of the tournament that would be played in all nine (9) GFF Member Associations.
Panthers, despite enjoying the bulk of possession found themselves trailing the Agricola boys following Randy Simon’s goal in the 13th minute. Thereafter, the Panthers dominated but displayed their inability to

be clinical in the final third.
The break came with Agricola still holding on to their lead which they gave up on 59 minutes when Tyrone Burnette finally made one of the Timehri chances count. The second half was all Panthers’ own but like in the first, chances went a begging.
Based on the competition rules, if a game ends tied at the end of 90 minutes, kicks from the penalty mark would be employed in order to decide the winner. This was the case after the final score in regulation time read, Agricola 1, Timehri 1.
After the first five kicks each, both clubs had missed one of their five kicks which meant that sudden death penalty kicks was the route to be taken to decide which team moved on. Timehri’s Tyrone David buried his shot, while Agricola’s Eion Daniels sent his shot well over the crossbar to send his team packing whilst there were eruptions of joy and at the same time relief from the Timehri Panthers lads.
Ms. Charissa Rampersaud, KFC’s Training and Human Resources Manager during her remarks following the march-past, noted that KFC is committed to development of the nation’s youth and their partnership with

the GFF is one such way that aim can be achieved.
“I’m very, very proud that KFC is a part of this tournament, we look forward to see all these teams having fun as they vie for the championship; I know every team wants to be a winner but I want to encourage you all to not just focus on winning but focus on having fun as you take part in this tournament.”
She noted that bonds would not only be formed with fellow team members but players would have the opportunity to meet and form new friendships.
GFF President Wayne Forde again expressed thanks to the KFC group, informing that the federation as eager to partner with them since it has provided opportunities for the young players.
“We believe that the KFC/GFF Independence Cup is a unique platform that would help most of you to contribute with your energies towards something that is positive, something that is fulfilling and uplifting; we want to invite the wider community along the East Bank corridor to come out and support the teams, and may the best team win.”
Forde told the players that he wants them to understand that many lessons would be learnt from them participating in the tournament.
“You will learn to celebrate goals; you will drop your shoulders when a goal is scored against you, you will learn to win and more importantly you will learn to lose. Some of the best lessons in life comes through adversity, so while know and we hope that everyone of you would want to emerge as the East Bank FA champion, only one team will do that.
It is important that the other teams enjoy the experience, follow the advice of our KFC Representative here to have fun and to cherish every moment that the 90 minutes and the other minutes. Play hard, play smart, play fair. Good luck to each and every one of you and let’s have an exciting competition.”
